Vernon Maxwell born September 12, 1965 in Gainesville, FL was a University of Florida basketball player. The 6′4″ guard averaged 20.2 points as a senior and still holds several Gator records. He left UF as the Gators’ all-time leading scorer (2,450) and the #2 scorer in the SEC behind Pete (Pistol Pete) Maravich. The university did have to erase his points for his junior and senior seasons due to Maxwell admitting to taking cash paymensts from coaches and drug use prior to games.
After Florida, Maxwell was a key member of the Houston Rockets’ first championship team and known for his clutch shooting. He was remembered for keeping Michael Jordan below his average points scored when faced up against him.
In 1995, Maxwell ran into the stands and punched a fan which started his bad boy rap all over again. 2 years later he was ordered to pay a woman $592,000 for knowlingly infecting her with herpes. The news on Maxwell slowed until recently in 2009. Maxwell was arrested in Florida for violation of probation charges relating to failed child support payments.
Maxwell’s attorney, Robert Rush, said child support payments were set when Maxwell was still a professional athlete and he can no longer meet the financial demands.
Current searches on the Alachua County jail Inmate yielded no results for Vernon Maxwell which would tell us that he is no longer in jail and his exact whereabouts are currently unknown.
If you have a former Gator athlete that you would like us to do a “Where are they now?” blog about, please contact us with the name and a quick reasoning on why this athlete should be researched.
