It’s unanimous! Florida Gators will start the 2009 football season as the #1 team to beat. They are also the highest favored team for a repeat championship which would make it their 3rd in 4 years.
This year also comes with Tim Tebow arguably the front runner for another Heisman trophy opportunity as well. The one year the Gators didn’t win the championship while Tebow has been here was the year that he picked up the Heisman which made him the first Sophomore to win this award.
Les Miles says he’s not giving in to they hype but definitely gives the recognition to the team as they do well deserver:
“I don’t think anyone in this league is giving in,” said LSU coach Les Miles, whose Tigers host the Gators on Oct. 10 in a Southeastern Conference battle.
“I guarantee we look forward to playing them. But it’s recognition. They all return except for Percy (Harvin). And anytime you have a quarterback that has the experience (Tebow) has, you’re in every game. I don’t think there’s any question they’re talented and capable, but I can’t imagine that won’t be an exciting day in Baton Rouge.”
LSU may very well prove to be the toughest opponent for Florida this year other than the SEC Championship Game that would be in the way of the title that has Alabama as a front runner for that spot and would be another tough road block on the road trip to the national championship game.
Note: The only team in the history of college football that has went wire-to-wire #1 was the 1999 Florida State Seminoles
