Florida Pressure Creates Turnovers and Win
When Florida needed a jumpstart, Billy Donovan went to one of his favorite weapons. No. 12 Florida played the final eight minutes of the first half with two fouls on both starting big men, so Donovan was forced to go with the full court press. The Florida lineup, undersized at times, created havoc and forced a total of 17 turnovers as the Gators picked up a 73-65 win over No. 25 Vanderbilt.

GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- Florida appears to have these short turnarounds figured out. Of course, it helps when the Gators are making 3-pointers and forcing turnovers. Kenny Boynton scored 18 points, Bradley Beal added 16 and No. 12 Florida beat No. 25 Vanderbilt 73-65 Saturday for its seventh consecutive victory.

Hannah Rogers was expected to see spot duty on the mound last season. Instead, she filled in for senior Stephanie Brombacher’s injuries and threw the most innings for the Gators as a freshman. Rogers has help on the mound this spring. Florida has two freshmen pitchers that were All-Americans in high school and are prepared to contribute immediately.

The most difficult part of Florida’s conference schedule starts Saturday afternoon. The Gators have played seven games against conference teams already, but they’ll close out the schedule with five of the remaining nine games against rivals Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The Commodores come to town on Saturday, and while they might not be ranked, they have Florida’s full attention.

Urban Meyer has caused some controversy in the Big Ten after recruiting players that were committed to Wisconsin coach Brett Bielema and Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio. Bielema has been vocal about his displeasure, saying that there is a gentleman’s agreement in the Big Ten not to recruit players to other schools. Donovan weighed in on the state of basketball recruiting.

Crest High School (Shelby, NC) has been known to crank out some of the country’s top defensive players. Among them for the Gators are 2012 signees Jonathan Bullard and Rhaheim Ledbetter, and former Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes. Now the Chargers have another top defensive end prospect in 6-foot-3, 235-pound junior Dane Rogers.

Billy Donovan was worried about nights like Thursday before the season started. The Gators struggled to shoot from the field and couldn’t get a rhythm from behind the three-point line. Despite coming out to a blazing start, Florida cooled off and found itself in a fight. Defense and timely free throws helped the Gators escape with a 74-66 win over South Carolina.

Florida was relieved to win with such a poor shooting performance.Kenny Boynton scored 24 points, Bradley Beal had his fourth double-double and the No. 12 Gators beat South Carolina 74-66 Thursday night for their sixth consecutive victory.Florida (18-4, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) swept the Gamecocks (9-12, 1-6) for the first time since 2008 and extended its home-winning streak to 18 games.

Daniel McMillan made public Thursday something that happened on Saturday. The Jacksonville First Coast linebacker traveled with his mother to Gainesville on Saturday for Florida’s junior day. While on the Florida campus, he committed to head coach Will Muschamp but kept it quiet. Thursday he couldn’t hold it back anymore and let the world know.

Will Muschamp got some much wanted news Thursday when super star linebacker Daniel McMillan from Jacksonville First Coast decided to go public with his commitment to the University of Florida. The 6-3, 220 pound McMillan visited Florida last weekend for junior day and came away very impressed. We interviewed him Monday at his school and he was all decked out in Gator gear.

While the prospects that picked schools on signing day may have been mostly disappointing for Florida fans, there is no denying that the Gators did well with their top five finish. Florida made it a point to concentrate their recruiting in the south and in-state, something they hope will benefit them down the road when they return to those programs for prospects.

The numbers didn’t end the way Florida drew it up, but the Gators will still bring in quality on the offensive side of the ball in the 2012 recruiting class. The eight players that signed on Wednesday bring unique talents to Gainesville as Florida waits for a decision from Our Lady Good Counsel High School wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Three of the eight offensive signees are already on campus.

Patric Young doesn’t care either way. The ankle injury he suffered in early January took him out of the starting lineup, but the sophomore center doesn’t mind that it has stayed that way since. Florida head coach Billy Donovan has brought Young off the bench over the last four games because of the energy boost he brings. They’ll reevaluate before Thursday night when Florida hosts South Carolina.

Will Muschamp learned from what happened during the fall. After the Gators struggled to stop the opponents’ run game or get a run game going for themselves, he decided to load up on players that will see time on both lines of scrimmage. Florida officially signed 14 players to do just that on Wednesday, adding size and strength to a team that needed it.
