Bernie Machen Holds UF High… Really High

Recently, Machen completed a survey ranking top schools. He gave UF a “distinguished” status, which is the highest rating on the survey.
No other school even close to UF in Florida according to Machen.
Along with the distinguished ranking, Machen also chose Harvard, Yale and Princeton. The rankings are just ridiculous. Each school president can put their school at “distinguished” and rank others at a lower mark. Clemson President put his school at distinguished and other Ivy League schools below it.
From the Gainesville Sun:
Eckerd College President Donald Eastman, one of 58 presidents who signed a nonprofit group’s pledge not to participate in the assessments, called the rankings “utter nonsense.” Eastman, who earned a doctorate from UF, said the assessments were the weakest part of the rankings.
“To say that Florida is better than Harvard or Columbia or such places is an exercise in hubris,” he said.
Eckerd is ranked on a list of liberal arts schools separate from UF, which is ranked among national universities.
Florida State Provost Larry Abele said he didn’t fill out the forms this year but usually ranks both UF and Florida State as strong. He said he might list UF as distinguished if not for the effect of state budget cuts over the past two years.
“They’re probably pretty close to distinguished,” he said.
