The football team’s national championship led a program-record tying 12 Gator athletic teams among the nation’s top 10 in 2008-09 national competition, propelling the University of Florida to third in the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. The finish matches the second-highest for the Gator program, second only to Florida’s tie for second in the 1998-99 standings.
Florida is the only program in the nation to finish among the nation’s top 10 in each of the last 26 national all-sports standings.

Florida finished a close number 3 behind North Carolina by 12 points. Stanford was a clear first with nearly a 300 point lead. Florida has never finished 1st and the best finish was a tie for 2nd in the 97-98 rankings. Our last top 3 finish was in 01-02. The past few years have had us no better than 5th and finishing 6th most of the time. This upcoming year with football, baseball, basketball etc could lead us in to a close finish for the 09-10 year.
Gator Zone has a typo in their opening paragraph. It mentions we tied for second in the 98 – 99 standings but the chart shows 97 – 99.
